289 High Performance Mustang

This is the story of my 1966 K Code Fastback.

Harold knew he'd have a Mustang of his own at some point. It was April, 1964 and his father worked for Ford and so he had a new 6 cyl. coupe as a promo car. Harold drove this car to the unveiling of the new Mustang at another dealership in Santa Barbara, CA. The GM was upset about this since the car being unveiled was under a cover... and Harold pulled into the parking lot spoiling the surprise.

Fast forward to late 1965... Harold was in the market for a Mustang and knew he wanted the best he could afford. He and his wife Diana couldn't afford a Shelby, so they bought the closest thing to it; a 1966 Hi-po Fastback. The car was
specially ordered to their liking in Sapphire blue (a Shelby only color for 1966 - also a Thunderbird color). They also optioned the car with black pony interior, styled steel wheels, power brakes, and a C4 automatic from the factory. Once the car arrived at the dealership a cobra intake manifold, cobra valve covers, tri-y headers, and a 9k Cobra tachometer were all added to the car.

For the next few years in the 1960's this car was drag raced on the weekends by Harold, and driven to work during the week by Diana. In 1968, gold stripes and side scoops were added for the Shelby look.

From the 1970's till the 80's I don't know much about the history of the car. The Dunkle's moved around a few times and eventually settled in Kirkland, WA in 1982. At this time the car was pretty much parked in the garage and sparingly driven.

In 1992 Harold start on his quest to completely restore the car to concours specifications. The engine was rebuilt, and had about 300 miles on it prior to the car being taken apart. The car was eventually stripped to a bear shell, sandblasted and all of the new parts gathered and bought for it. Time must've crept up on him because 12 years later (2004) the car was in this state.

So, how did I end up with the car?

The Dunkle's have been long time family friends of my girlfriend Ashleigh, in fact they lived across the street from each other for some years. Ashleigh's mom knew I was into Mustangs and told me that Harold and Diana had one that was going to be put up for sale due to a divorce. I wasn't really interested since I had three Mustangs at the time but thought I'd see what it was.

Well, what it is is a numbers matching (all three VINS/data plate/engine block), original owner car that has 99.99% of the correct parts. Click here for pictures of the car when I first went to check it out.

I bought the car November 24, 2004 and brought it home December 12th.

So, what condition is the car in now?

As of October 2005, I've had the C4 transmission completely rebuilt, regasketed the engine as well as detailed it and had the quarter panels and rear tail light panel replaced to fix the damage seen above. The next step is to have the body work and paint done. I've been trying to find a local shop to do the work, but nothing has materialized yet. In the mean time I continually scour the internet and classic car magazines in search of NOS parts. I currently have all NOS exterior trim items and many interior things as well.
